County Makes Slow Progress on IV Safety as City Takes Baby Steps on eBikes, Housing; Dissecting Indy Endorsements

Writer: Newsmakers with JRNewsmakers with JR

Less than three weeks before Election Day, the SB Independent this week published its final campaign endorsements, Santa Barbara's most influential political testimonials.

In a singular, all-Indy-all-the-time edition of Newsmakers TV, Nick Welsh and Callie Fausey join the genial host to discuss some of the newspaper's most notable and didactic endorsements, from the surprising -(opposition to the Prop. 33 statewide rent control initiative and no recommendation in SB's closely-matched District 1 City Council contest), to the anticipated (support for every tax increase, bond issue and other expenditure of Other People's Money it could find) and the indispensable (well-informed selections for very consequential but little-publicized electoral scuffles for the county and the Santa Barbara Unified School District boards of trustees).

Margaux Lovely, on the scene in Isla Vista, reports on what steps county officials and landlords have taken to increase safety in IV, during he year since friends of UCSB student Benny Schurmer, who died in a fall from the bluffs, began a petition campaign to find ways to avoid such tragedies in the future.

And Ryan P. Cruz reprises his reporting from that big conclave of community housing stakeholders, and supplies an update on how City Hall and the SBPD finally have begun to move ahead on regulating the ebike bedlam on downtown streets, which may or may not prove sufficient, to spare pedestrians from being forced to cheat death every time they set foot on State St.

Plus: why the first seven words of a news story really matter, a cameo appearance by Marianne Partridge, and a brief digression on how George Orwell relates to the fight between tenants and landlords.

All this and more, right here, right now on Newsmakers TV.
